NEW: The China-Africa Trade Index to be unveiled this year

The China-Africa Trade Index

The China-Africa trade index will be released for the first time during the 3rd China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo to be held from June 29 to 2nd July 2023 in Changsha, China.

8 African countries namely: Benin, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, Malawi, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Zambia, will attend as the guest of honor countries.

The expo will feature a release of the China-Africa economic and trade relations report, in addition to the activities such as: forums, business talks and seminars. First launched in 2019, the expo is a major platform for strengthening economic and trade cooperation between China and African countries.

Implications for Kenya

This report is a welcome move as it will provide data on the extent of trade between China and Africa, as well as inform stakeholders and policy makers in Kenya on how to forge meaningful and beneficial partnerships with the world’s second biggest economy.

Kenya imported $4.03bn from China in 2021, and exported $199.62mn, making Kenya a net importer of Chinese goods. Can Kenya improve on its trade with China such that it becomes a net exporter to China?
